Green Banana Fibre and Inulin (Prebiotic Fibre)

Prebiotics are non-digestible fibres that selectively stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria already present in the gut. Green Banana Fibre and Inulin are the two prebiotic components used across Petz Park probiotic and multivitamin formulas. They work by feeding the probiotic bacteria rather than acting as bacteria themselves.

    Mechanism of Action

Green Banana Fibre is rich in resistant starch, a type of starch that passes through the small intestine undigested and arrives in the large intestine where it is fermented by beneficial bacteria, particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. This fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily butyrate, propionate and acetate. Butyrate is the preferred energy source for colonocytes (the cells lining the colon) and plays a critical role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. Inulin is a fructan fibre that is also selectively fermented by beneficial bacteria and increases bacterial diversity in the gut microbiome. Both ingredients support the survival and colonisation of the Bacillus probiotic strains in the Petz Park probiotic formulas.

    Evidence Summary

Prebiotic fibres including inulin and resistant starch have strong evidence in both human and veterinary medicine for their role in gut microbiome modulation. A 2011 study in the Journal of Animal Science examined inulin supplementation in dogs and found significant increases in Bifidobacteria populations and SCFA production. Research on green banana powder in dogs is more limited but resistant starch broadly has well-established fermentation characteristics across mammalian species. The prebiotic effect is mechanistically consistent and does not require species-specific clinical trials to establish validity in the way that pharmacological claims do.

    In Petz Park Products

Probiotics for Dogs: Inulin and Green Banana Fibre as prebiotic components alongside the Bacillus probiotic complex. Probiotic for Cats: same prebiotic complex. Multivitamin for Dogs: Green Banana Powder 500mg per scoop as the base ingredient and primary prebiotic component.

    Safety and Considerations

Prebiotic fibres are safe for dogs and cats at supplemental doses. In some animals, particularly those with sensitive digestive systems, introducing prebiotic fibre too rapidly can cause temporary gas and bloating. Introducing gradually and building to the full dose over several days is recommended, which is the same guidance given for the probiotic products that contain these fibres.
