    Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant in the nightshade family native to India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as an adaptogen, a substance that is said to help the body adapt to and manage stress. In modern supplement practice it is used in products targeting anxiety, stress and cognitive support in dogs.

    Mechanism of Action

Ashwagandha's primary active compounds are withanolides, steroidal lactones that modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis governs the body's stress response and regulates cortisol production. Withania somnifera has demonstrated in preclinical studies the ability to reduce cortisol levels, lower markers of oxidative stress in the brain, and modulate GABAergic activity, the same pathway targeted by pharmaceutical anxiolytics. In the context of brain health it has demonstrated neuroprotective properties including reduced neuroinflammation and improved synaptic plasticity in animal models.

    Evidence Summary

The evidence base for ashwagandha in dogs and cats specifically is limited. Most published research uses rodent models or human subjects. A 2012 randomised controlled trial in humans (Chandrasekhar et al, Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine) found significant reduction in stress scores and serum cortisol in subjects receiving ashwagandha extract. Extrapolation to dogs is based on shared HPA axis physiology and mechanism. There are no large-scale RCTs specifically in dogs at the time of writing. Veterinary use is based on safety data from animal toxicology studies, shared biological mechanisms, and clinical experience. Petz Park positions ashwagandha as an adaptogen that supports stress modulation, reflecting the honest evidence position that clinical proof in dogs specifically is currently limited.

    In Petz Park Products

Stress and Anxiety for Dogs: Withania Somnifera 225mg per scoop. Brain Support for Dogs: Ashwagandha 50mg per scoop. Stress and Anxiety for Cats: Withania Somnifera 50mg per scoop (lower dose for feline physiology).

    Safety and Considerations

Ashwagandha is generally considered safe for dogs at supplemental doses used in commercial pet supplements. It belongs to the nightshade family but the glycoalkaloids that make some nightshade plants toxic are present at negligible levels in the root and leaf extracts used in supplements. Pregnant animals should not use ashwagandha as it has traditional use as a uterine stimulant. Animals on thyroid medication should be monitored as ashwagandha may affect thyroid hormone levels at high doses. Consult a veterinarian before use in animals with autoimmune conditions.
