The liver is the largest internal organ in dogs and performs over 500 functions including nutrient metabolism, toxin filtration, protein synthesis, bile production and blood clotting factor production. Liver disease in dogs is often diagnosed late because the organ has significant reserve capacity: clinical signs typically do not appear until more than 70 percent of liver function has been lost. Regular monitoring and early nutritional support are the most effective preventive strategies.
Types of liver disease in dogs
Common forms include acute liver failure (rapid onset from toxin exposure, infection or drug reaction), chronic hepatitis (progressive inflammation from immune-mediated disease, copper accumulation or persistent infection), vacuolar hepatopathy (common in dogs with Cushing's disease or long-term steroid use), portosystemic shunts (abnormal blood vessels that bypass the liver), and breed-specific copper storage disease particularly prevalent in Bedlington Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Labrador Retrievers and Dalmatians.
Signs of liver problems in dogs
Signs include yellowing of the skin, gums or whites of the eyes (jaundice), increased thirst and urination, vomiting, reduced appetite, weight loss, abdominal bloating, pale or grey stools, dark urine, and in advanced cases neurological signs including disorientation and seizures (hepatic encephalopathy). Many dogs show no obvious signs until disease is well advanced. Annual blood panels including liver enzyme values (ALT, ALP, GGT) are the most reliable detection method.
How liver supplements work
Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is the most studied natural hepatoprotective ingredient in veterinary medicine. Its active compound silymarin has documented anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and antioxidant properties, and promotes regeneration of liver cells. Schisandra chinensis has adaptogenic properties and documented hepatoprotective effects in studies of liver injury. Beetroot powder provides betaine and nitrates that support liver detoxification pathways and bile flow. Petz Park Liver Support is described as a low protein formula, reflecting the dietary management principle that dogs with impaired liver function benefit from reduced protein load.
