The four most impactful health changes in senior dogs
Joint disease is typically the first visible change. Cartilage thinning and increased inflammation reduce mobility and recovery from exercise. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) affects 14 to 35 percent of dogs aged 8 and over on formal screening, rising to 68 percent at 15 to 16 years. It is significantly underdiagnosed because owners attribute behavioural changes to normal ageing. Dental disease, often silent for years, frequently becomes symptomatic in senior dogs as accumulated tartar causes gum recession and tooth root exposure. Organ function changes, particularly in the kidneys and liver, reduce a senior dog's ability to process drugs, toxins and metabolic waste as efficiently as they once did. Annual blood panels from age 7 detect these changes before clinical signs appear. See the joint health concern page and the brain and cognitive health concern page for detailed information.
Recognising cognitive dysfunction syndrome in dogs
CDS is the canine equivalent of dementia and it is dramatically underdiagnosed. The DISHAA framework captures the key signs: Disorientation (getting lost in familiar environments, staring blankly at walls), altered Interactions (reduced interest in family members, or conversely increased clinginess), Sleep-wake cycle changes (nighttime restlessness, increased daytime sleeping), House soiling (accidents in a previously house-trained dog), Activity changes (repetitive behaviours, reduced interest in play) and Anxiety (new fears, increased vocalisation at night). A dog displaying two or more of these signs warrants a veterinary assessment specifically for CDS. A 2022 study from the Dog Aging Project found that inactive dogs are 6.47 times more likely to develop CDS than very active dogs, making continued physical activity one of the most evidence-supported interventions. Brain Support for Dogs contains Bacopa Monnieri, Ginkgo Biloba, Ashwagandha and EPA + DHA specifically for cognitive support.
The senior supplement routine
The Senior Care bundle addresses the two most common and most impactful concerns in older dogs: joint health and cognitive function. Hip and Joint for Dogs provides Glucosamine 800mg, MSM 400mg and Chondroitin 400mg per scoop to support cartilage integrity and joint fluid production. Brain Support for Dogs provides Bacopa Monnieri 125mg, Ginkgo Biloba Extract 90mg and Ashwagandha 50mg for cognitive support and neuroprotection. Both can be used as separate products or as the Senior Care bundle. For dogs with additional dental, skin or urinary concerns, the relevant supplements can be added alongside the senior core routine.
Environment and lifestyle adjustments for senior dogs
Physical modifications reduce daily pain load significantly. Provide ramps or steps to furniture and vehicles your dog previously jumped to. Use orthopedic bedding at floor level. Keep food and water bowls at a comfortable height. Reduce walk length but increase frequency to maintain joint mobility without fatigue. Keep the environment predictable for dogs with cognitive changes as novelty and change increase anxiety in dogs with CDS. Continue gentle mental stimulation through food puzzles and low-intensity training to support cognitive function.
The annual senior health checklist
From age 7: full blood biochemistry and haematology, urinalysis, blood pressure measurement, body weight and body condition score, dental assessment, and if warranted, thyroid and joint radiographs. From age 10: increase to every 6 months. Any dog showing sudden changes in behaviour, appetite, water consumption or mobility should be assessed regardless of schedule.
